New Policy Brief:

How Migration Moves Economies, Societies, and Democracies

Standard Error

Standard Error is pleased to announce the publication of a new policy brief prepared in collaboration with King’s College London, based on the 6th Workshop on the Economics and Politics of Migration, held in Madrid in May 2025.

This year’s workshop, co-hosted by the EBRD, Fundación Ramón Areces, and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, brought together top migration scholars from across Europe and the Americas to share new empirical work on how migration transforms not just labor markets, but the fabric of democratic societies.

In the brief, we distill key findings from 13 papers presented during the event—covering topics as diverse as:

  • How immigrants fuel innovation and entrepreneurship
  • The unintended fallout of punitive migration policies in Austria and Denmark
  • The political and economic aftershocks of forced displacement from Venezuela and mass deportations to El Salvador
  • What French soldiers returning from the American Revolution can teach us about the global diffusion of liberal ideas
  • How local integration efforts can empower internal migrants in urbanizing countries

We also spotlighted the inaugural Standard Error Best Paper Prize, awarded to Artur Obminski (Paris School of Economics) for his innovative work on social segregation in Poland following the arrival of Ukrainian refugees.

With migration pressures reshaping democratic politics worldwide, these insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers seeking to design humane, effective, and forward-looking migration policies.
